Casablanca is a film that captured
the hearts of many, but also gave many people something to relate to and to
this day is still seen as one of the most recognizable films ever made. Casablanca
was never thought of as a big hit movie. It was just one of the many films that
Warner brothers did that year, but with the all star cast, amazing story line, especially
hitting on the war going on in the world, many people in America could relate
to this movie.
For such a star filled cast the
movie should of automatically been a hit, but the plot, story, and the time period made this movie a
classic. But there is more to the movie then just that. The director was a genius when it game to
using lighting to tell the mood of the movie.
When the movie starts out and they are singing in the night club it was
very bright, upbeat happy. But once rick saw his long lost love things changed.
That night when he was drinking alone in the bar it was very dark and gloomy. Suggesting
a depressed mood. This movie is filled with lighting techniques like this to
give the viewer at home a sense of actually being there, and feeling the
emotions of the actors. Another thing done is at the end part of the movie,
when it was a depressing time; of course it was done at night, sort of a noir
style of filming.
The use of speeding up the film
slightly gave it a upbeat feel, but the close up on the actors faces at pivotal
points in the movie truly gives you an essence of the emotion in the movie. When
rick sees Ilsa, his long lost love for the first time the close up on her face
really gives you a feel for what the director wanted you to see. The unknowing
of what was going to happen with the love triangle made this for a suspenseful
love story that many people could relate to.
